What is a Mother Blessing?

A Mother Blessing is about the new mother to be. It is where the mother to be's friends, relatives and close circle ladies will come together to celebrate and support the mother before her birth. A blessing is normally held anytime from 34 weeks onwards.

It is to empower the mother-to-be as she transitions into motherhood. To shower her with love and honour her and all those who have birthed before and will birth after, reminding her that she is not alone.

It is different from a baby shower as this is about the mother and her transition into motherhood and beyond. It is one of the biggest journeys we do into motherhood and this is about support, love and empowerment as you make that journey.

A blessing/ceremony can be adapted to what the mother to be requires.

It typically takes up the setting of

  • Circle ceremony

  • Physical nurturing

  • Thread ceremony

  • Sharing of food

It can include, poems, reading a favourite inspirational passage, bringing a bead that the mother can then put on a thread to make a a chain of love from her guests.

There could be a making of a flower crown, drawing pictures or sharing photos of a favourite time together.

A mother’s blessing is an intimate party inspired by an ancient Navajo ceremony called a blessing way.

The ceremony is held to prepare an expectant mother for her upcoming birth journey—to shower

mom-to-be with love, support and encouragement. The act of birth is seen as a rite of passage for women,

and this is meant to help a woman feel mentally, physically and emotionally ready to give birth.
